1948, France. Unable to cope with his war trauma, artist Maurice flees into painting meaningless still-lives that his wife Lucille can’t find any buyers for.
In a fit of anger causing him physical pain, he takes an overdose of his medicine. His hallucinations filled with distorted memories, he finally produces new inspired artworks in which Lucille sees an opportunity to better their financial situation – with success.
Maurice’s condition getting worse and worse, desperation turning into greed, Lucille resolves to violence but is ultimately left with a dead body and a room haunted by nightmares.
