My semester project is an animated short film in 3D. It has a length of around 130 seconds (including the credits) and can be viewed by all kinds of audiences. Overall it has a very
simple and colourful style so that it looks like it is mainly targeted towards children but it’s supposed to look appealing to every possible viewer.
The project’s topic “simple” can be found in the simplicity of the environment and the limited amount of overall assets. The environment and characters (except for the main character) are supposed to look all the same – without lacking complexity in the overall aesthetic. All characters are egg-shaped and have flexible, stick-like limbs.
The plot also hints back to the term “simple” as there is no major diversity in the character’s and no distinguishable personality. The only aspect that isn’t as simple as the rest, is the main character, which is the reason the portrayed conflict takes place in the first way.
The story of the film is about a child that is born into a world where everyone looks the same. However, the child is not like everyone else because it has a face and therefore the ability to easily portray happiness and other emotions. Because of this, the child gets rejected by its parents and society which results in inner conflicts and depression. Because of the discrimination and social pressure, the child has to choose between being accepted or keeping its happiness. This is the climax as well as the turning point in the story, near the end of the film. The child erases its face after spending several days in isolation. After the child has done this, looking like everyone else, it finally gets accepted by its parents and allowed to stay around them.
