A depressed and overwhelmed girl dreams of a simpler life. She gets lost in a world where she can be her true self, where things are easier and she is able to express herself however she likes. After returning to the real world, she is filled with hope and love for herself.
My main character Annabelle is a closeted trans woman struggling with taking the first steps in her transition and new life. She is stuck in a loop of depression, feelings of anxiety, and dysphoria, leaving her hopeless and desperate. The short film shows her coming to terms with her goals and her identity in an abstract way. During the course of the film, she experiences her dream body by “traveling” to an idealized world on the other side of her mirror, while simultaneously making little steps towards her true self in the real world. In the end, she comes to terms with herself and her identity and regains hope.
I went into this project knowing that I wanted to create something personal where I could be able to express an issue that I deal with myself. While brainstorming the topic „simple“ I caught myself thinking about how I wish things would be simpler for myself. As a trans person, coming to terms with yourself is hard and sometimes I need to remind myself of how things could look for me in the future to not lose hope. That’s exactly where the concept for the project took form. Overall, I wanted to create an abstract experience, rather than a story with a simple but concrete plot.
